I can't expect anything less from these two

Playing in some of the worst pool conditions.

At least they changed the cloth this year.

Irish Car Bombs!

Notice the drops of Irish Cream on my forehead from when I dropped the shot into the pint of Guinness.

Fun times in "the Windy City"

TVs on the bus!

Now that's just sick

this constant need people have to ALWAYS be entertained

Don't forget, the law school is DOWNTOWN. A one hour trip turned into four hours, grrr.

This is the Evanston campus, right on the shore of Lake Michigan.

There seem to be two main ways to match players during an APA pool match. The "Old School" way, as William Fuentes called it, is trying to match players by rank and skill. So, you put high skilled players against the other team's high skilled players, and likewise with low skilled players. The other way is to what I will title the "insurance" method. This is when you try to play your high skilled players against someone of lower skill on the other team, so that you have a better guarantee of obtaining that point. For example, playing me, a decent 4, against a bad 3 or a bad 4, because that way we will definately obtain that point. So which way is better?

I prefer the Old School method. I think that high skilled players should, first of all, be challenged. Second, I think placing high skill against high skill gives the lower skilled players a better chance to win, too. This maximizes points for the night. So, if I play a 5 against the other team's 5, then my 3 has a better chance of beating the other team's 3, whereas in the "insurance" method, my 5 will probably beat the other team's 3 but then my 3 doesn't have a good chance against their 5. This also subtracts the whole APA "anyone can win" act, because it puts people up fairly against each other, with no one having an advantage of having to play fewer games to win the match.

However, I, as captain, have only been in charge of matching players in one playoff match so far. And we lost... maybe a different method should be used for playoffs? After all, there's no need to maximize points anymore, only 3 is enough to win. I will have to think about this one some more.

'Tis the season again.
Saturday night. Pool practice at Broadway. No table 16. Not for 9 ball. I've been practicing a lot lately. And I played more matches this season than I probably did in all my other seasons this year combined. 34. And 23 wins. I don't even want to count how many games that is. Pretty sick. I've been noticing improvement, too, but it's going to plateau if I don't start forcing myself to do drills. Bought another book. Hopefully that will help. I have also been practicing my mental game. First of all, trying not to get distracted, or blaming misses on...well... anything. And second, trying to feel more of the game rather than calculating angles.

Damn job, I didn't have time to get my camera.
The Hard Covers met at "Sea" restaurant to discuss "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn, and pick the next book.

Zlata's suggestion was chosen at random.

We are now reading "The Game" by Neil Strauss.

All are welcome to join the book club! Read the book, post on my forum, and come to our next meeting on Friday, December 29, 2006.
Sea has good food, but loud music. Not the best atmosphere for a discussion, but it didn't matter because most of us didn't finish the book anyway.
I finished it today.
Then we went to that chocolate place.

MMmmm. There was a pipe containing pure chocolate flowing above my head.

Needless to say, I had difficulty processing thought.

I haven't had enough! --> November 2006
