Harriman State Park

So you know that stop soon after you get onto the Palisades Parkway in Jersey? It invites you to parking and a scenic view, and you're curious to get off and take a look, but you JUST got onto the highway, and so you keep going, thinking next time you'll get off?

You probably have no idea what I'm talking about. But anyway, this is that stop.

On top of Bear Mountain, in Harriman State Park.

After stopping at Bear Mountain, we drove to the Silvermine Picnic Area, and parked overnight (apparently, it's allowed, since my car did not get towed).

We hiked along Silvermine Lake.

And we camped at the intersection with the Appalachian Trail in Harriman.

By the way, where there's an A.T. Shelter, there are always good campsites around.

Our meeting with wildlife - a deer, at VERY close range, wasn't scared at all! I must've stood there filming it for a good 5 minutes, about 20 feet away. And a chipmunk, of which there are many in this park.
